Children

It is very important that your child's eyes are checked throughout childhood. An examination is free under the NHS for those under 16. As well as checking for short or long-sightedness, we can also check for any binocular vision problems such as a squint (strabismus) or lazy eye (amblyopia). Your child's eyes can be examined at any age and we would certainly recommend a check-up before they start at school.

We have an extensive range of childrens' frames suitable for toddlers to those fashion-conscious teens. Frame brands include Adidas, Esprit, Star Wars, Eye Stuff and the house brands of Jump and Edge. The 'OK' range of frames is totally covered under the NHS voucher scheme. For those playing sport we offer a range of sports goggles and prescription goggles for swimming.

You only have one pair of eyes
…. look after them!

Whilst parents tend to be well informed about the risks of UV exposure to the skin, their child's eyes tend to be forgotten about. It is well reported that there is a link between UV exposure and cataracts and more worryingly a recent study linking UV radiation to eye cancer.

Children's eyes are delicate, their sight is still developing, and they are ultra sensitive to both UV and blue light. The damage starts early and is cumulative.

By the age of 18, children will have been exposed to more that half of their total lifetime exposure to UV.

Children have very definite ideas about fashion and eyewear is no exception, regardless of the need for a correction. It is important for children to have a well-fitted pair of spectacles that filter out damaging UV rays. Sunglasses are the obvious answer and come in a range of exciting colours and designs and can be fitted with prescription lenses. We have a good range that cover most prescriptions at an 'all in' price of £35.00. This includes the lenses, frame, tint and most importantly a UV blocker. Parents may also be interested to learn that polycarbonate lenses like the Junior Airwear are clear lenses (non tint). These filter out unwanted UV light, are impact resistant, thinner and lighter than standard lenses and come with a scratch resistant coating. You can protect your children without them even knowing it.
